If you want to treat the family to a great mini-vacation sometime, and you like airplanes and jets, you could rent a car and head over to the Air Force Armament Museum in Fort Walton Beach. It’s only 40 miles, an hour’s drive, from Pensacola.
The Air Force Armament Museum is located on the Emerald Coast of the Florida Panhandle. It’s on Highway 85 South, 7 miles north of Fort Walton Beach. The museum is open Monday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Central Time. It is closed on federal holidays. Tours are self-guided and photography is permitted.
There are over 29 different aircraft at the Air Force Armament Museum, from the WWII era to the present. There are also several hundred pieces of armament that include a gun collection, bombs, bomblets and missiles from the Sparrow, Sidewinder, cluster bombs, Bunker Buster and the MOAB.
A 32-minute film on the history of Eglin Air Force Base and its role in the development of armament is shown continuously throughout the day.
No advance notice is necessary for groups; however, it is best to call ahead at (850) 882-4062 to insure there are no other functions happening. Groups with children under 10 years of age must have one adult for every seven children.
